Crit'Air and low-emission zones (ZFE) in France: ordering the sticker

Crit'Air is a windscreen sticker showing a vehicle's environmental class, from 0 (electric) to 5. It is required in low-emission zones (ZFE) and during pollution peaks. Without it you risk a fine. Class 5 includes older diesels.

Where it is required

Low-emission zones exist or are being introduced in several big cities (Paris, Lyon, Grenoble, Strasbourg, Montpellier, Toulouse, Marseille…). Each authority sets restricted classes, hours and exemptions, and rules change: check the city's website and ecologie.gouv.fr. Other towns may impose restrictions during pollution peaks.

How the class is set

By fuel type and Euro standard (field V.9) or first registration date (field B). The oldest vehicles are unclassified. A petrol car generally has a better class than a diesel of the same year. Very old unclassified vehicles face the strongest restrictions.

Common mistake

Ordering from an unofficial site.

Ordering and price

Order only on certificat-air.gouv.fr: a few euros including postage, while copycat sites charge far more. The order confirmation can be shown until the sticker arrives. Prepare registration number, first-registration date and make. The sticker is posted to France or abroad.

Common mistake

Assuming foreign cars are exempt.

Foreign vehicles

Foreign cars also need the sticker in low-emission zones, ordered on the same site (foreign vehicles section) with the registration document. After registering in France, order a new one.

Common mistake

Keeping the old sticker after new plates.
